Proxy

From the ashes of the soviet empire, from the flames of history, rises the proxy. Post 9/11 rave vibes cloaked in muscovite angst. The future and the past rolled up.’ - TIGA.

This my attempt to show how excited I am about the forthcoming proxy tour; a few booming mixes by the 'gritty russian' and a selection of some of my favorite proxy tunes and remixes.

Proxy is not light stuff. His music is described as 'dark', 'gritty' and 'distorted'- be warned. I didn't shine to his style immediately- it's something new- evil rythmic twists with a fairly simple but powerful reverbed drum pattern. What works so well for me is the moment of sanity before the track takes it's 'true form'. The 40 or so seconds of Dancing in the dark before the throbbing synth invades our ears, the melodic piano pattern at the begginning of the moby remix. Proxy's music is so energetic and intense, infact, that for the last 2 months I have been 'using' his music first thing every monday morning to wake myself up for my lectures. It works.

Simply, Proxy's music is full of energy and should always be listened to as loud as possible.
Enjoy!

Little Dragon

Rarely do you come across a track that makes you stop what you're doing and just listen. You might be doing work or just on facebook but you'll find yourself completely lost in the music. The same was true of one particular song as i did my regular trawl through juno's new releases a few weeks ago. While perusing the downtempo section, which i'll admit tends to be hit or miss for me, i came across the 'Twice' remix EP by a nice Swedish 4 piece called Litttle Dragon.

Little Dragon hail from Gothenberg, Sweden. Made up of lively vocalist Yukimi Nagano and her close high school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrick Källgren (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). Little Dragon stepped into the scene back in 2006 with the release of their first double A-side single on Off the Wall later to be re-released on british indie label Peacefrog (home to José González and Findlay Brown). Yukimi has sung with Sweden’s electronica-jazz outfit Koop, and both Yukimi and Erik play live with José González.

On the Remix EP 'twice' gets re-worked by London's very own Aaron Jerome. If you haven't heard of him check out his myspace for links to his podcast and list upon list of his remix projects. A nice more dramatic twist on the original yet managing to stick with the strong keys from before. Well worth a listen.

Little Dragon are in London for 2 consecutive dates in March. First port of call is Camden's Jazzbar on the 13th then the Round House on the 14th. Check them out, I'm definitely going to.

Blendcrafters

Dj Numark & Pomo 'Blendcrafters'

Be it a drunken loss of your Mp3 player or a broken computer or viruses, whatever we've all done it. At first you're thinking about all that music you're going to have to find all over again and most of the time you wont remember half of it. It's one of those things that at first is an obscene hassle but then, when you think about it, it isn't really the worst thing. I know searching down that one particular remix that took so long to find or the live version of so and so is a pain but you tend to find a lot of unexpected gems on the way. My point is sometimes it can be the best thing in a way. It forces you to think about what you like to listen to and can often expand your tastes.

One of the Albums i re-discovered was released back in 2004 by Jurassic 5's Dj Numark and Pomo. The instrumental album 'Blendcrafters' is one you listen to start to finish no skips. Each track has something a bit different. I remember at the time a few tracks in particular getting a lot of heat namely the cover of John Lennon's 'Imagine' and 'Melody' which received a nice spicing up courtesy of MF DOOM.
